If you’ve never played Idiot before, don’t worry – it’s a very simple card game that’s easy to learn. It is a fun game for all ages. The object of the game is to get rid of all of your cards before anyone else does. There are only a few basic rules to follow, and we’ll go over them all here.

The “Idiot” game, also known by other names like “Shithead” or “Palace,” is a popular card game that involves strategic gameplay and shedding cards. The game is typically played with a standard deck of playing cards and can be enjoyed by 3 or more players. The main objective of the game is for players to get rid of all their cards as quickly as possible in order to avoid becoming the “Idiot” in the next round.

The Setup

To start the game, each player is dealt a hand of cards. The dealer then sets up the remainder of the deck face down in the middle of the players. If you are playing card games online, there might be other rules to follow.

The cards will then be dealt three at a time 3 times to all players. To start the deal, deal each player three cards face-down in front of them, creating three separate piles. Then deal an additional three cards, one on each pile, face-up to each player. Finally, deal each player 3 more cards to the side face-down.

These last three cards will be picked up and will be their hand. Then, each player can trade cards from their hands with the faceup piles in front of them. The strategy here is to put high cards and 2s and 10s on the face-up piles; also important to know is that in this game, Ace is always high, and suites do not matter; only numbers determine rank.

If the last card from a player’s hand matches a card in their piles, they may play the card in front of them as well.

How to Play Idiot

To start the game, the person to the dealer’s left may play a 3 if they have one. If they don’t have one or wish not to play it, then play proceeds to the next player, who may decide to play a 3 card. If it goes all the way around and a 3 has not been played, then it continues to 4s, and so on and so forth, until the first card is played.

After the first card is played, the player will draw back up to three cards in hand; players will always draw up to three until the draw pile is emptied then that step is skipped.

To continue playing, the next player will need to play a card of the same or higher rank as the top card of the discard pile. This is how players will play cards out of their hands. If a player cannot play a card matching the criteria or wishes not to, they must pick up all the cards in the discard pile and add them to their hand.


Special Rules

There are a few special cards in the game of idiot:

  • 2s are used to reset the number in the discard pile; to play them, discard the 2 and the number you wish to change the new discard number to.
  • 6s are special; if there are three or more 6s on top of the discard pile, you may burn the discard pile.
  • 10s are burn cards; a player can use this card to burn the entire discard pile, meaning all cards, including the 10, are permanently removed from the game. The next player will just start the discard pile with whatever card they wish.
  • Jokers are also used to reset the number in the discard pile. Decide, before starting the game of idiot, if you and your co-players will include Jokers or not. Only some people think they belong in the game.

How to Discard the Current Pile

Strategically you will want to add as many cards to the burnt pile to reduce your risk of having to pick up a large pile. This can be done by playing your burn cards early enough in the game and trying to keep them for later when the pile has built up.

If the discard pile ever holds four or more of the same number on top of it, the discard pile is then moved to the burn pile and removed from the game permanently. You may also use special cards such as 6s and 10s in order to burn a pile.

How to End the Game

To end the game of Idiot, the player with the highest score is declared the winner. If there is a tie for the highest score, the player with the most cards in their hand is declared the winner. If you want to include a funny feature in the game, you can place a witty hat on the idiot’s head to crown your loser.
