Before we dive into the different types of card games, let’s go over the basic principles that apply to the game generally.
First, the game runs on a 52-deck of cards, all of which have different ranks according to their symbols and numbers. These cards ranked in descending order, are as follows.
There are four different suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades, and they have equal value mostly. Now, let’s see what else to note.
Shuffling is critical to any card game, as it randomizes the deck and ensures a fair game. To shuffle a deck of cards, split the deck in half and riffle mix the two halves. Repeat this process several times to ensure the deck is fully randomized.
Dealing means the distribution of cards to the players, which is done by the dealer (who's chosen chiefly randomly and rotates clockwise after each round). The number of cards you receive depends on the particular variant, so ascertain that before sitting at the table.
This also varies according to the game but generally involves arranging the cards in a specific way or setting up the game board. Please read the instructions carefully and follow them closely to ensure a fair and enjoyable game.
The card game universe boasts countless offerings, but we’ll focus on the selections you’ll find across most casinos in New Zealand and the world. We’ve classed them according to how many participants there are in the game.

Let’s explore some of the best card games to play as a family, ensuring that everyone can join in on the fun.
Go Fish! is a beloved classic that teaches children matching and turn-taking skills. The game revolves around collecting sets of four cards of the same rank by asking other players if they have any cards of a specific rank. If the player being asked has the requested cards, they must hand them over. If not, the asking player must "go fish" and draw a card from the deck. The game continues until all the sets have been collected, and the player with the most sets wins. Go Fish! is easy to learn and provides hours of entertainment for the whole family. Its simple rules and colourful cards make it accessible to players of all ages.
Crazy Eights is a fast-paced card game that improves number recognition and critical thinking. The objective is to be the first player to get rid of all their cards. Players take turns playing a card that matches the rank or suit of the top card in the discard pile. If a player cannot play a matching card, they must draw cards from the deck until they can. The game introduces exciting twists with special cards, such as skipping a player's turn or reversing the direction of play. Crazy Eights keeps everyone on their toes and guarantees laughter and friendly competition.
War, mentioned earlier as a great two-player game, can also be adapted for family play. The game's simplicity and luck-based mechanics make it an excellent choice for children of all ages. It provides an opportunity for family members to engage in friendly rivalry and enjoy some light-hearted competition. To adapt War for family play, you can introduce additional rules, such as a "War Council" where players can strategise with their teammates and determine the best course of action. This variation adds an extra layer of excitement and collaboration to the game.
Old Maid is a hilarious game of luck and strategy, where players aim to avoid being left with the "old maid" card. The deck consists of pairs of matching cards and one old maid card. Players take turns drawing cards from each other's hands, trying to find pairs and discard them. The player left with the old maid card at the end of the game loses. This game is particularly enjoyable for younger children, as they laugh and giggle at the anticipation of not getting stuck with the dreaded card. Old Maid promotes memory skills and encourages interaction among players.
Concentration, also known as Memory, challenges children's memory and concentration as they try to match pairs of cards. This game not only provides entertainment but also improves cognitive skills such as focus and recall. Concentration is a perfect choice for family game nights, as players of all ages can participate and test their memory prowess. To play Concentration, shuffle a deck of cards and lay them face down in a grid pattern. Players take turns flipping two cards, trying to find matching pairs. If a player successfully matches a pair, they get to keep the cards and take another turn. The game continues until all the cards have been matched, and the player with the most pairs wins. Concentration is an enjoyable way to challenge your family's memory skills while having a great time together.
Trick-taking games are a subcategory of card games that involve players playing cards in a series of rounds, with the objective of winning the most valuable cards or specific combinations of cards. These games require players to carefully consider their card choices, anticipate their opponents' moves, and employ strategic thinking to come out on top. Let's explore some popular trick-taking games that provide engaging and mentally stimulating gameplay.
Spades is a well-known trick-taking game where players bid on how many tricks they think they can win and try to fulfil their predictions. The game is typically played with four players in partnerships, with teammates sitting across from each other. The game begins with a bidding phase, where players assess their hands and bid on the number of tricks they believe they can win. Once the bidding is complete, the gameplay follows a standard trick-taking format. The highest-ranking card of the led suit wins the trick, and the player who wins a trick leads the next one. The objective is to fulfil the bid and win the required number of tricks. However, if a player fails to meet their bid, they face penalties. Spades requires strategic planning, careful observation, and a keen understanding of the cards played. It is a favourite among competitive players who enjoy the thrill of outsmarting their opponents.
Hearts is a trick-taking game that revolves around avoiding certain cards and aiming for the lowest score. The game is played with four players, and the objective is to have the fewest points by the end of the game. Each heart card carries penalty points, while the Queen of Spades carries a hefty penalty of 13 points. The game begins with players passing a specific number of cards to their opponents, strategically choosing cards to offload high-point cards or burden their opponents. Once the passing phase is complete, the player holding the 2 of Clubs starts the first trick. Players must follow suit if possible, but if not, they can play any card. The player who plays the highest-ranking card of the led suit wins the trick and leads the next one. The game continues until all the tricks have been played, and the player with the lowest score emerges victorious. Hearts requires careful planning and deduction, making each round a delightful challenge.
While trick-taking games dominate the card game landscape, there are plenty of non trick-taking games that offer unique gameplay mechanics and experiences. These games often involve elements of strategy, luck, and sometimes a touch of deception. Let's explore some popular non trick-taking card games that provide engaging alternatives to traditional trick-taking gameplay.
Exploding Kittens is a card game that combines strategy, luck, and a healthy dose of absurdity. The game's objective is to avoid drawing an exploding kitten card from the deck while using various cards to manipulate the deck, skip turns, or attack other players. The last player standing, who manages to avoid the exploding kitten cards, wins the game. Exploding Kittens delights players with its quirky artwork and unpredictable gameplay. It offers a unique and refreshing experience that keeps everyone on their toes and sparks laughter and friendly banter.

The objective is to arrange all the cards in four foundation piles, organised by suit and in ascending order from Ace to King. Players must strategically move cards between seven tableau columns, adhering to certain rules, to uncover hidden cards and create the necessary sequences. The objective is to build sequences of cards in descending order from King to Ace within the tableau piles. Spider Solitaire introduces the concept of building complete sequences of the same suit, which can be moved together as a unit.
